Volume Header Corruption Causes Data Loss in Mac OS X
Mac OS X operating system enables you to divide your hard drive into several partitions, called volumes. Every Mac volume is formatted using a file system, which can be HFS, HFS+, HFSX, or HFS Wrapper. The information related to Mac volume, such as volume size, file system type, starting sector address, and more, is stored in volume header. In case the volume header gets damaged, entire volume becomes inaccessible and you face severe data loss situations. At this point, Mac file recovery becomes need of hour, if there is no updated backup in place.
Mac OS X operating system provides an inbuilt utility, called Disk Utility, to fix most of the errors on Mac hard drive volume. It checks consistency and integrity of the file system and hard drive.
